This was such a suspenseful, thrilling read! After hearing such great things about this book,  I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it!

We are introduced to DS Ruby Preston and I have to say that I love this character.  She is tough and ruthless with a hidden past.  While she mostly follows the rules, she sometimes finds her own means and connections in finding out information.  We learn early on that she was once involved (or is she still involved…??) with notorious crime leader Nathan (another character I fell in love with).  The connection she has with his family comes in handy when she needs information, but also comes at a price.  The dynamic between these two characters is perfect.  The cop in love with the king of crime and vice versa kept me intrigued.  Can they be together given their occupations?  Their love is real and their chemistry jumped from the pages.

The mystery unfolds when a woman goes missing and ends up being found dead.  Before more women become victims, it is discovered they being targeted due to giving up a child for adoption some 20 years ago.  The killer was given up for adoption and is on a mission to find her ‘perfect happy ending’.  However, in a terrifying twist, the mothers must play the exact role the killer is seeking, or they fail.

This story kept me guessing until the very end.  There are so many twists and turns and the book is very fast-paced.  There were times when I was reading so fast, I wasn’t able to turn the pages fast enough (or click my kindle fast enough, I should say).  The mystery was suspenseful, and at times disturbing which is completely up my alley!

This is the first book I’ve read by Caroline Mitchell, but will definitely not be my last.  I cannot wait until the next Ruby Preston book comes out!  In the meantime, I will be reading her other books!
